| Adult Basic Education
Northeast
Community College, along with the public schools, libraries,
senior citizen centers, jails, churches, industrial firms,
the Nebraska Department of Education, the U.S. Department
of Education, and other organizations, jointly sponsor Adult
Basic Education (ABE) classes and tutoring sessions in Norfolk
and other communities in the area. Over 56 class sites were
conducted last year in the 29 communities which served a
total of 1339 adults.
- The ABE program provides instruction in:
Adults who are 16 years of age and older and not enrolled
in a secondary school may begin classes at any time and
progress at their own rate.
Volunteers Needed: If you have a High School Diploma,
we encourage you to get involved in your community as an
Adult Basic Education Volunteer. There are various
assignments available, ranging from tutoring to office assistance.
Programs are established in local communities through requests
of prospective students, advisory committee members and
the need expressed from the past year's programs.

Preparation for Nebraska
High School Diploma
Adults and youth who want to prepare for the General Educational
Development (GED) tests to qualify for the Nebraska High
School Diploma may attend weekly classes and tutoring sessions
in several area locations and/or daily classes and tutoring
sessions on campus.
Students attend individualized tutoring sessions studying
for the five GED tests in writing skills, math, science,
social studies, and reading. When prepared, students may
test at any one of the three testing centers:
- Norfolk
- South Sioux City
- Winnebago
Preparation for the Nebraska Law Enforcement
Entrance Test:
Instruction in preparation of the Law Enforcement Entrance
Test (TABE) can be given at weekly classes and tutoring
sessions in several area locations and/or daily classes
and tutoring sessions on campus.
Basic Skills Improvement in Reading,
Mathematics, and Writing
Beginning to advanced instruction is available in reading,
mathematics, and writing. Specially trained reading tutors
are available to help adults learn or improve reading skills.
Classes and/or individual tutoring sessions are available
to give students as much help and time as they need.
Life Skills
Consumer Education, Self-esteem, and Parenting Skills
self improvement mini classes are available to help adults
to better function in society and in their communities.
Job Preparation
Computer instruction is available on campus and some tutoring
sites to help improve typing and basic knowledge of the
computer in preparation for the job. Computer programs available
are typing skills, career exploration and English grammar
improvement for the job.
English as a Second Language
Adults who speak minimum English may take English as a
Second Language classes through Adult Basic Education to
improve their ability to speak, understand, write, and read
the English language. The classes stress pronunciation,
basic sentence patterns, essential vocabulary and survival
skills.
Citizenship and Naturalization Education
Citizenship and naturalization education prepares foreign-born
adults to take United States Naturalization tests. Instruction
includes principles of US Government, civics and history,
which can be also applied for permanent residence in the
United States.
