Veterinary Technician Applicants

In addition to regular admission and application procedures, applicants for the veterinary technology program must also apply for admission into the program. Selection into the veterinary technology program is done during the fall semester. Applicants will know their status in the program on or around November 1st. Persons wishing to apply to the program will be given a veterinary technology program packet at the time of class registration or they can call the director of the program to request a packet.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

1. Must have completed or will complete the following course work by the end of the fall semester of the current academic year: VTEC 1000 Animal Husbandry and Restraint; VTEC 1110 Veterinary Terminology; VTEC 1120/1121 Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals and Lab; BIOS 1010 General Biology and Lab; AGRI 1000 Microcomputer Applications; and MATH 1045 Applied Math - Elementary Algebra or higher level math.

Students must carry a minimum of a 2.5 GPA in the above courses and make satisfactory progress in all course work in order to qualify for an interview for the veterinary technology program. The student's mid-term grade will be used to estimate the GPA for program selection; however, the final grade will be used to determine the student's final ranking. For students who have taken comparable courses from other institutions, an official transcript needs to be sent to the Registrar's Office. The student's GPA is worth 30 percent of the selection criteria

2. Submit two recommendation forms. These are found in the application packet. One letter should be from a veterinarian and the other from a non-family member. The two letters of recommendation are worth 10 percent of the selection criteria.

3. Complete 20 hours of observation in a veterinary clinic. Students will be required to document their hours. The observation form is in the application packet. It is recommended that students complete this during the summer prior to their fall enrollment. In the fall semester students will be directed to complete a short hand written essay about their observation hours. This essay will be used to evaluate the student's writing ability. Students are advised to keep a journal of their activities. The essay is worth 20 percent of the selection criteria.

4. Students meeting the above criteria will be granted an interview for admission into the veterinary technology program. The interview is worth 30 percent of the selection criteria.

5. Complete the personal profile found in the application packet. The personal profile is worth 10 percent of the selection criteria.

6. Upon selection to the veterinary technology program, the student must complete a physical examination, receive the rabies inoculation or sign the inoculation wavier, provide proof of medical insurance, and receive any other inoculations required by Northeast Community College.
