Utility Line Applicants
In addition to regular admission and application
procedures, applicants for the utility line program
must meet the following requirements:
- Graduate from high school or complete GED
tests.
- Before admission to the program, students will need
to attain the following minimum entrance scores:
COMPASS—Math Pre-Algebra Test 30, Reading
60, Writing 34; ASSET—Math Numerical Skills
Test 37, Reading 35, Writing 38; ACT—Math 16,
Reading 14, English 14.
- Due to State and Federal laws requiring all drivers
of vehicles over 26,001 pounds to have a Commercial
Drivers License (CDL), it is mandatory
that the student has a valid vehicle operators
license when classes begin and maintain this
license until the student obtains his/her CDL.
Once the student has obtained his/her CDL, the
student must maintain a valid CDL throughout
the remainder of the course of study.
- Any utility line student who loses his/her license
or CDL will be unable to continue in the utility
line program. The student must re-apply to the
program, and his/her name will be placed at the
bottom of the wait list for the next academic
year.
- Northeast Community College’s utility line
program follows all Federal requirements for
drivers of commercial motor vehicles (CMV) for
admittance into the program. Students must have
a current medical examiner’s certifi cate signed by
a physician and pass all required drug and alcohol
tests. The required drug/alcohol testing includes
pre-admittance, random, post accident, and reasonable
suspicion testing. Physical examinations
and drug and alcohol testing will be provided by
the College.
Any student who is unable to obtain a medical
examiner’s certifi cate, fails a drug/alcohol test,
refuses to take a drug/alcohol test, intentional
attempts to alter or to give a watered down or
weak sample, or fails to appear in the allotted
time to take a drug/alcohol test will be unable
to enter or continue in the utility line program.
Any student who is dismissed from the utility
line program for any offense of the medical and
drug/alcohol testing policy and wishes to re-enter
the program, must be withdrawn from all utility
line classes and place his/her name on the wait
list for the following year. In the event that the
student does re-enter the program, he/she will be
required to provide evidence that he/she has successfully
completed an approved substance abuse
program. These students will be subject to the
standard medical and drug/alcohol requirements
as a new student.
- Students registered for the CDL class and lab must
obtain a Commercial Drivers License Learners
Permit from the State of Nebraska.
- Each student must provide a Motor Vehicle Record
from the student’s state of residence by the
second week of classes for each term in which
he/she is enrolled including summer internship.
- In order for a freshman utility line student to
progress from fi rst semester to any second semester
freshman utility line classes, he/she must
successfully complete ALL the following classes:
UTIL 1010, 1020, 1030, 1040, MATH 1020 and
have a minimum 2.0 GPA. Any student who does
not complete ALL the fi rst semester requirements
must re-apply to the program, and his/her name
will be placed at the bottom of the wait list for
the next academic year.
- Any freshman utility line student who fails to successfully
complete ALL required fi rst-year utility
line classes is ineligible to continue in the utility
line program including summer internship. If the
student has fulfi lled all fi rst semester requirements
he/she may reenter the second semester the following
January if an opening exists.
- All utility line students must receive a passing
grade in ALL required fi rst-year classes and have
a minimum of a 2.0 GPA in order to be eligible
for internships. All students must have and
maintain a valid class “A” CDL throughout the
entire internship in order to participate or receive
credit for their internships.
- Utility line students must successfully pass their
summer internships prior to beginning their sophomore
year. No students will be allowed to take
second-year classes or labs without the successful
completion of the summer internship.
- For the safety and required ability to perform the
skills needed in the electric utility industry, any
utility line student who fails to meet all requirements
for any semester and must re-take the failed
class(es) or lab(s) as needed for graduation, must
also re-take that term’s corresponding class(es)
and lab(s) in order to proceed to the next term
including internship or for graduation.
- No student currently enrolled in the utility line
program may place his/her name on the wait list.
Students who wish to be placed on the wait list
must first withdraw from all utility line classes.
