Disability Services

Northeast Community College

The Disability Services Program is committed to providing equal educational opportunities for enrolled students who have documented disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. Academic accommodations are determined on an individual basis.

Do I need accommodations for a disability?

Do I have a physical, mental, or emotional disability that affects my ability to study, learn, process information, access classrooms or resources, or otherwise limits or interferes with my abilities to be a successful student?  Yes  No

Do I have problems studying, learning, processing information, concentrating, or getting things done even though I have never been diagnosed with a disability?  Yes  No

Did I need or have I received accommodations in high school or on a job?  Yes  No

Do I avoid reading because I do not seem to understand when I read something the first time?  Yes  No

Did I have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Plan in high school?  Yes  No

If you answered yes to one or more of the five questions, you may need an accommodation. If you could benefit from accommodations, it is very important for you to understand that you should request accommodations on or before you register for classes– to wait may result in you not doing well in college. When you schedule a visit to NECC, please request a visit with Mary Balaski, Disability Services Coordinator.

Application to Disability Services and Accommodation Procedure

Step 1-2

  1. Complete a Northeast Community College Admission application
  2. Review the entire Accommodation Procedure and follow the steps outlined below
  3. Step 3-6 Enroll Into The Disability Services (DS) Program-Intake Meeting.

  4. Disclose you have a disability to the Disability Services Coordinator (DSC) and discuss the impact the disability may have on completing your education.
  5. Note: A diagnosis of a disability does not automatically qualify a student for accommodations under the ADA.

  6. Apply for services bycompleting the Disability Services Application with the DSC or designees.
  7. Provide current and appropriate documentation for which a diagnosis has been offered by a qualified professional. This document should indicate the impact the disability will have on obtaining an education. The college does not pay for obtaining documentation.
  8. Determine with the Disability Services Coordinator appropriate accommodations. Request specific services or classroom accommodations at the intake meeting . Students who qualify for services will work with the DS Coordinator or designee to determine reasonable accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids and services.
  9. STEPS 7 - 9 Are the Student’s Responsibilities Initially and Each Semester

  10. Complete with the DS Coordinator “Letters of Accommodation” once you have competed the steps 1-6 and registered for classes. The DS Coordinator will provide a "Letter of Accommodation" for students for each class they are requesting accommodations to take to faculty as an official notification to the instructor that the student has a certified disability that requires the specified accommodations.
  11. Obtain your “Letters of Accommodation(s)” from the DSC the first week of the semester and present them to your course instructors; if you are taking a distance learning class you will communicate electronically with your instructor. Students present the letters to instructors of their classes in which they are requesting accommodation and discuss their accommodation(s). If you are taking online/distant learning classes, ask the DSC to e-mail the Letter of Accommodation after you have communicated to your online/distant learning instructor a need for accommodations.
  12. Students with disabilities are responsible for contacting DS Coordinator if reasonable accommodations are not implemented in a timely way or are not effective.
  13. Students must meet the academic standards expected of all students.
  14. Students must review the effectiveness of their accommodations and evaluate services each semester
