| SPCH 1110 - Public Speaking
Course Description:
This course provides both theoretical basis and practical instruction for speaking effectively in public. The course emphasizes training in basic speech skills, development of voice, topic selection, audience analysis, speech preparation and organization, researching, strategic and creative language use, effective listening and delivery skills, and common types of public speeches, acknowledging the influence of various cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Identify and perform skills necessary for selected types of public speeches.
- Acquire knowledge of the importance of effective language, voice, gestures, and visual aids in public speaking.
- Research and organize a variety of speeches.
- Develop and deliver a purposeful message with appropriate physical presence and vocal variety. *
- Apply knowledge of the communication process.
- Respond critically to questions raised by readings and speeches.
- Listen to, analyze, and evaluate various types of speeches within their cultural context
- Incorporate information from outside source(s) ethically, effectively, and appropriately

Content Information:
- Define the role of the public speaker in relationship to the audience, the content of the speech and the purpose of the speech.
- Describe and participate in the process of preparing and presenting speeches.
- Demonstrate a variety of presentation techniques.
- Describe and explain that basic speech communication models.
- Apply listening skills that assist the communication process.
- Critically evaluate the public discourse of others with awareness of cultural context.
- Demonstrate professionalism and tolerance for opposing viewpoints.
- Cite sources using APA, MLA, CMS, or Turabian citation style.
- Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability with the available technology in the public speaking context.
Course Expectations: Students are expected to:
Requirements for the Major Speeches
- All presentations must be submitted on a VHS tape.
- A typed, full content outline and reference page will be emailed the day each presentation is due.
- Use and verbal citation of three (person of interest), four (speech of definition), and six (persuasive) sources per speech.
- For each presentation, you may use three notecards.
- Time limits will be set for each presentation. Points will be deducted for being under or going over time.
- One visual aid will be required for the first two speeches. Each visual aid will be graded on an ACF scale. If you do not meet the visual aid requirement, you will receive an F. If you have a visual aid, but it does not meet the guidelines we will discuss, you will receive a C. If you meet the visual aid requirement and follow the guidelines, you will receive an A.
- An interview or survey must be completed for the persuasive speech. Again, this will be graded on an ACF scale.
- I must OK your topic ahead of time.
- All video tapes must be postmarked by the dates established in the course calendar.
- All video tapes must be accompanied with a return envelope with sufficient postage so the tape can be returned to you. Tapes without sufficient postage and an envelope will not be returned.
- All tapes must be mailed to Melissa Lemke-Elznic, 411 Vroman St, Winside NE 68790
Requirements for Minor Speeches
- All presentations must be submitted on a VHS tape.
- Two minor speeches will also be given in class. Very limited preparation may be required.
- A two-minute minimum time limit will be set for each minor speech.
- All video tapes must be postmarked by the dates established in the course calendar.
- All video tapes must be accompanied with a return envelope with sufficient postage so the tape can be returned to you. Tapes without sufficient postage and an envelope will not be returned.
- All tapes must be mailed to Melissa Lemke-Elznic, 411 Vroman St, Winside NE 68790
Other expectations will be addressed within the course.
Student Requirements:
- Have a valid e-mail address
- E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
- Have access to the Internet
- Not only will students have requirements within the online format, students will be expected to videotape their presentations and submit the tapes to the instructor according to the course deadlines.
- Must have the required textbook, camcorder, and videotapes.
- The student must have computer literacy skills to:
- Save and retrieve files to a location
- Download, save, and open files from a source
- Locate and submit files with an attachment
- Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
- Participate in an online chat room environment
- Navigate the Internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
- Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
- Tape a speech presentation with an audience present
- Submit the tape to the instructor
- Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
- Have adequate computer operating hardware
