OFFT 1740 - Advanced Medical Terminology

Course Description: This course presents a study of medical terminology.  Chapters 1 and 2 provide the basics—the building blocks of most medical terms.  Chapters 3-14 are organized according to body systems.  (45/0/0/0)

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Spell, pronounce, define, identify word parts, and correctly use medical terms or complete a statement using medical terms.
  2. Construct an acceptable and correctly spelled medical term, give the definition.
  3. Provide a medically acceptable abbreviation for phrases, names, or labels.
  4. Supply the correct medical term to properly complete a statement.
  5. Correctly provide the plural form if given a singular form of a medical term.
  6. Correctly provide the singular form if given a plural form of a medical term.
  7. Construct correctly spelled medical terms from word parts and definitions.
  8. Provide the correct phrase, name, or label for a medical abbreviation.
  9. Correctly pronounce each term in a list of medical terms.
  10. Achieve a percentage score of 60 percent or higher on quizzes, mid-term, final exam, and any other assignment.

Content Information:

The final grade will be comprised of all test scores, discussion board responses, chat line, correctly submitted weekly assignments, mid-term test, and the comprehensive final.

All assignments must be submitted through the student assignment center by the assigned due date or they will not be graded. No late assignments will be accepted. All assignments must include the first and last name of the student, chapter and exercise number, and the date.

Course Expectations: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Pronounce key medical terms.
  2. Spell key medical terms.
  3. Define key medical terms.
  4. Identify word parts.
  5. Correctly use medical terms.
  6. Construct an acceptably spelled medical term given the definition.
  7. Provide a medical abbreviation for phrases.
  8. Provide a medical abbreviation for names.
  9. Provide a medical abbreviate for labels.
  10. Provide the plural form of a given singular form of a medical term.
  11. Provide the singular form given the plural form of a medical term.
  12. Correctly spell medical terms from word parts and definitions.
  13. Provide the correct phrase for a medical abbreviation.
  14. Provide the correct name for a medical abbreviation.
  15. Provide the correct label for a medical abbreviation.
  16. Correctly pronounce each term in a list of medical terms.
  17. Use the programmed learning, word building system, grammar, and word parts.
  18. Achieve a minimum percentage score of 60% on quizzes, mid-term, final exam, and any other assignment.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid e-mail address
  2. E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
  3. Have access to the Internet
  4. (quantify) Hours a student is expected to work in the course
  5. Must obain required access codes, books, lab supplies, and supplemental maerials
  6. The student must have computer literacy skills to:
    • Save and retrieve files to a location
    • Download, save, and open files from a source
    • Locate and submit files with an attachment
    • Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
    • Participate in an online chat room environment
    • Navigate the Internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
    • Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
  7. Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
  8. Have adequate computer operating hardware
