Course Description: This course studies the fundamental principles and procedures essential to the management, storage, evaluation, and disposal of both physical and electronic business records. Time will also be devoted to the study of the systematic analysis and technological control of business records through the records life cycle. Emphasis will be given to the alphabetical method and will cover the basics or geographic, subject, and numeric systems.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Describe how records are classified and used in an office.
- Apply the fundamentals of records programs to manage all phases of the record life cycle.
- Explain records management, history, key legislation, and current trends in records/information management.
- Identify records management as a profession, related professional organizations, and career opportunities in the field.
- Recall and use records management vocabulary.
- Explain the difference between automated and image records.
- Demonstrate proficiency in how to use electronic records.
- Demonstrate proficiency in how to utilize word processing, database, and/or spreadsheet software programs for records management purposes.
- Explain benefits and demonstrate the use of color coding files.
- Demonstrate how to use a database and create tables to add, modify, sort, search and print records.
- Demonstrate how to index and retrieve electronic records.
- Demonstrate the use of filing equipment and supplies.
This course is designed to prepare the student for all of today’s record management environments. If you work diligently through this text and the practice materials, you should acquire strong skills in basic filing procedures and develop competence in managing computer records.

- Students will be required to complete the exercises and submit the assignments for each of the twelve chapters.
- On-line discussion will be needed if the student needs specific help with assignments.
Course Expectations: To complete this course, students will be required to:
- Maintain regular and continued on-line attendance. You will be expected to log-in to the course Web site at least twice a week to work through course materials and participate in course discussions. You will be expected to log-in to SNAP and complete tutorials bi-weekly.
- Spend approximately five to seven hours per week learning the objectives and skills for each chapter and preparing for tests and assignments.
- Submit assignments and meet deadlines for testing.
- Communicate with the instructor regularly throughout the course.
- Manage the technology of an on-line course; work the on-line tutorials if not an experience on-line student.
- Act in a mature and professional matter when interacting with instructor and classmates.
- Expect to have timely feedback from instructor. E-mail will be answered within 72 hours and homework graded and returned within seven days of deadline due date.

- Must have computer literacy skills to:

- Create, open and read e-mails and attach files to an e-mail.
- Obtain all required texts and supplies before the first day of class.
- Submit all assignments, quizzes, tests, discussions and projects before or on due date to receive full credit.
