MATH 2030 - Introduction to Statistics/Business Statistics

Course Description: This course is a study of algebraic sets, finite probability spaces, counting techniques, creating graphs, random sampling and binomial distribution with the use of Fathom software.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand computer and network basics.
  2. Definitions of basic terms of statistics
  3. Descriptive analysis and presentation of single-variable data
  4. Descriptive analysis and presentation of bivariate data
  5. Basic concepts of probability
  6. Basic concepts of counting
  7. Normal probability distributions
  8. Sample variability
  9. Introduction to statistical inferences
  10. Inferences involving one population
  11. Use Fathom software to analyze data and graph data

Content Information:

  1. The final grade in MATH 2030 will be comprised of all test scores, discussion questions, assigned daily work, and a comprehensive final exam.
  2. All work must be submitted to the student assignment center. You may either scan in your written work or type all of your work into a WORD document. All work submitted must show detailed steps for solving. Any work submitted with just the answers will be graded a zero. Please make sure that your first and last name along with the assigned page number is clearly shown on each submitted assignment.
  3. Grades will be determined using the following weighted scale:

    Chapter Assignments 40%

    Exams 50%

    Discussion Questions 10%

Course Expectations: Students are expected to:

  1. Students are expected to check their WEBCT mail and class calendar regularly to make sure that they keep up with class requirements.
  2. Students are expected to complete all assigned work on time. This includes daily homework, discussion questions and test.
  3. Students are expected to contact the instructor if they are going to be unable to login for a long duration of time.
  4. No test shall be made up unless arrangements are made BEFORE the scheduled test date.
  5. Students are expected to show all work on any assignments that will be handed in and all test that are completed. I will be paying particular attention to the work that you show when solving your assigned problems. It is essential that you show each step that is performed – in fact it is a requirement.I reserve the right to take points off or count the problem incorrect for not showing your work or for work that does not match the answer given. I cannot stress the importance of showing all your steps; since, this is how we will communicate to each other.
  6. Students are expected to actively participate in classroom discussions.

Students can expect:

  • To have timely feedback from instructor. Email will be answered within 72 hours and homework graded and returned within seven days.
  • That the instructor answers all questions completely and provides feedback on assignments.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid e-mail address
  2. E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
  3. Have access to the Internet
  4. Student is expected to spend approximately 10 hours a week in the course
  5. Must obtain required access codes, books, lab supplies, and supplemental materials
  6. The student must have computer literacy skills to:
    • Save and retrieve files to a location
    • Download, save, and open files from a source
    • Locate and submit files with an attachment
    • Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
    • Participate in an online chat room environment
    • Navigate the Internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
    • Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
  7. Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
  8. Have adequate computer operating hardware (see online course information on the website for hardware requirements)
  9. It is very helpful if you have access to a scanner.
  10. Have the Fathom Software that is bundled with the textbook when purchased new.
