LIBR 1110 - Administration of Library and Information Environments

Course Description: This course is designed to introduce the student to administration issues in library and information environments. Topics include governance, planning, budgeting, evaluation, marketing, facilities, personnel issues and management.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Describe how the library/information center fits legally within the organization’s governance structure.
  2. Identify the Nebraska statutes that pertain to libraries and information environments.
  3. Describe the planning process in libraries and information environments.
  4. Describe the budget process in libraries and information environments.
  5. Identify planning tools and resources.
  6. Identify marketing tools and resources.
  7. Discuss the process of policy formulation and evaluation.
  8. Discuss various personnel laws and issues in libraries and information environments.
  9. Discuss the need to comply with relevant national, state or local facility and safety codes.
  10. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of partnering with other institutions, agencies and organizations.
  11. Define what the term “advocacy” means in libraries and information environments.
  12. Discuss various management styles.
  13. Compare and contrast the differences between leadership, management and task-oriented employees.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid e-mail address, using it to e-mail the course instructor within one week before the first day of class.
  2. Access the Internet to log in regularly to check e-mail, respond to discussion prompts, and fulfill reading and homework assignments in a timely fashion.
  3. Communicate with the instructor throughout the course about content questions, assignments, and deadlines.
  4. Take the prerequisite course: LIBR 1010 – Introduction to Library and Information Services, from Metropolitan Community College (Omaha).
  5. Library work experience is beneficial.
