Course Description:
This course provides an overview of information technology. Concepts to be covered include: history of data processing, computer hardware, computer software, problem-solving techniques, and business use of computers, social aspects and careers.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Understand computer and network basics.
- Identify computer system hardware components.
- Compare binary and decimal number systems.
- Contrast and compare software technologies.
- Understand the importance of file management, virus protection and backup.
- Identify the basics components of data communication systems.
- Describe and identify web technologies.
- Describe the implications of the Information Age.
- Explore career opportunities in information technology.
- Contrast and compare different information systems.
- Contrast and compare large-scale computer systems with standard computer systems.
- Define basic computer terminology.
- Write with a sense of purpose, organization, and mechanical correctness.
Content Information:
In order to receive a passing grade for INFO 1020, students must successfully complete sufficient assigned work to receive a ‘C’ or better.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have completed the following:
- quizzes and/or exams over course content
- assigned study tips/worksheets for each chapter
- contributed to class discussions
- assigned projects and other pertinent assignments
Course Expectations: Students are expected to:
- Spend approximately 9 hours per week learning information technology concepts
- Have a working knowledge of MS Word and the Internet
- Submit homework and take quizzes/exams before deadlines
- Act in a mature and professional manner when interacting with instructor and classmates
Students can expect:
- To have timely feedback from instructor. Email will be answered within 72 hours and homework graded and returned within seven days.
- That instructor answers all questions completely and provides relevant feedback.

- Have reliable access to the Internet.
- Successful students find a minimum of 9 hours of work is required per week.
- Obtain required textbook before the start of class.
- The student must have computer literacy skills to:
- Download, save, and open files
- Create, edit, and submit files as attachments
- Participate in online discussions
- Create, open and read e-mail messages.
- Ability to scan some assigned work; complete the assignment and save as .jpeg files and submit
Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and /or non-credit online preparation course. Introduction to Information Technology does not provide training in online instruction.
Have adequate computer operating hardware and appropriate software programs.
