INFO1020 - Introduction to Information Technology

Course Description: This course provides an overview of information technology. Concepts to be covered include: history of data processing, computer hardware, computer software, problem-solving techniques, and business use of computers, social aspects and careers.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Understand computer and network basics.
  2. Identify computer system hardware components.
  3. Compare binary and decimal number systems.
  4. Contrast and compare software technologies.
  5. Understand the importance of file management, virus protection and backup.
  6. Identify the basics components of data communication systems.
  7. Describe and identify web technologies.
  8. Describe the implications of the Information Age.
  9. Explore career opportunities in information technology.
  10. Contrast and compare different information systems.
  11. Contrast and compare large-scale computer systems with standard computer systems.
  12. Define basic computer terminology.
  13. Write with a sense of purpose, organization, and mechanical correctness.

Content Information:
In order to receive a passing grade for INFO 1020, students must successfully complete sufficient assigned work to receive a ‘C’ or better.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have completed the following:

  1. quizzes and/or exams over course content
  2. assigned study tips/worksheets for each chapter

  3. contributed to class discussions
  4. assigned projects and other pertinent assignments

Course Expectations: Students are expected to:

  1. Spend approximately 9 hours per week learning information technology concepts
  2. Have a working knowledge of MS Word and the Internet
  3. Submit homework and take quizzes/exams before deadlines
  4. Act in a mature and professional manner when interacting with instructor and classmates

Students can expect:

  • To have timely feedback from instructor. Email will be answered within 72 hours and homework graded and returned within seven days.
  • That instructor answers all questions completely and provides relevant feedback.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid email address
  2. Contact instructor via email prior to the first day of class.
  3. Have reliable access to the Internet.
  4. Successful students find a minimum of 9 hours of work is required per week.
  5. Obtain required textbook before the start of class.
  6. The student must have computer literacy skills to:
    • Download, save, and open files
    • Create, edit, and submit files as attachments
    • Participate in online discussions
    • Create, open and read e-mail messages.
    • Ability to scan some assigned work; complete the assignment and save as .jpeg files and submit

Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and /or non-credit online preparation course. Introduction to Information Technology does not provide training in online instruction.

Have adequate computer operating hardware and appropriate software programs.
