| HIST 1050 - World History I
Course Description: This Course is “A chronological study of world civilizations giving an overall view of contributions made by these civilizations from ancient times to l7l5.”
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Comprehend the origins of history.
- Understand the growth of Ancient India
- Understand East Asia.
- Understand the rise of Ancient China.
- Know the impact of Ancient Greece on the world.
- Know the impact of the Roman Empire on world history.
- Understand the development of Christianity and the break that occurs.
- Comprehend the impact of the Islamic world on world history.
- Understand African history before European.
- Understand Asia between 320-1400 A.D.
- Understand the development of Europe in the Middle Ages.
- Understand the American cultures before 1500.
- Comprehend the impact of the Renaissance on European history.
- Comprehend the affect of the Reformation on Europe.
- Understand the impact of European exploration on the world.
Fundamental Academic Competencies and Skills (FACS): Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of individual, national and international diversity.
Content Information:
- In order to receive a passing grade for HISTORY 1050, students must complete sufficient work assigned by their instructors to earn 350 points out of 500 total for a course grade of “C” or better.
- A minimum grade of “C” is required to qualify for transfer.
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will have completed the following:
- Class assignments, including short biography, syllabus quiz, and course evaluation.
- Reading assigned chapters and related online chapter material,
- Completing a chapter test over each assigned chapter
- Answering an assigned discussion question for each chapter.
- 5- fully documented original research papers of not less than three hundred words in length
- 5-separate paragraph responses to research papers posted by other students in class and positive responses must show a knowledge and understanding of other papers
- Completion of comprehensive multiple choice and essay final test.
Course Expectations: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Evidence an understanding of the historical background underlying the formation of modern civilizations.
- Recognize historical figures, events, and movements and be able to briefly discuss and connect these with present events and locations throughout the world.
- Use knowledge gained in this course as a foundation to the future study of history and related disciplines.
- Show an understanding of the uniqueness and individual worth of world civilizations that evidences an appreciation of their contributions
Student Requirements:
- Have a valid e-mail address
- E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
- Have access to the Internet
- Students are expected to work 12 hours weekly in the course. Three hours of which is needed to read required information on the internet and post and complete internet assignments. The remainder of the time will be needed for the reading of text material and time for research.
- Must obtain required Textbook: A History of World Societies 6th edition Volume I to l7l5. McKay, Hill, Buckler & Ebrey published by Houghton Mifflin. Boston, MA, 2000. Textbook web page is found at http://college.hmco.com/history/world/mckay/world_societies/6e/students/index.html .
- The student must have computer literacy skills to:
- Save and retrieve files to a location
- Download, save, and open files from a source
- Locate and submit files with an attachment
- Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
- Participate in an online chat room environment
- Navigate the Internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
- Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
- Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
- Have adequate computer operating hardware
