GEOG 1020 - World Regional Geography

Course Description: A regional survey of the world's various political units.  Emphasis is placed on the development of a theoretical framework for understanding geographical phenomena and problems.  Special attention is focused upon the interpretation of the inter-relationship between human activities and the physical environment.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Interpret geographical framework necessary for understanding world events and world development
  2. Recognize the inter-relationship of people and their physical environment
  3. Determine an understanding of the cultural divergences that resulted as different groups of humans interpreted earth resources and transformed the earth's surface differently
  4. Understand various world and regional problems
  5. Recognize the backgrounds of the various components of our culturally pluralistic global community
  6. Use communication skills to effectively analyze geographical world events and development

Course Expectations:

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have completed the following:
    • Read assigned chapters and related online material
    • Completed a weekly test over the assigned reading
    • Participated in weekly online discussions
    • 4- fully documented research essays
    • 4- mapping assignments
  2. In order to receive a passing grade for GEOG 1020, students must complete sufficient work assigned by their instructors to earn a course grade of “C” or better.
  3. A minimum grade of “C” is required to qualify for transfer.

Students can expect to:

  1. Have timely feedback from instructor.
  2. Have instructor answer all questions completely and provide relevant feedback.
  3. Have fair and equal treatment with other students enrolled in the class.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid e-mail address
  2. E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
  3. Have access to the Internet
  4. Students are expected to participate in weekly discussions, submit assignments and take tests as assigned on time.
  5. Must obtain required Textbook:  World Regional Geography:  A Development Approach. 8th Ed. Upper Saddle: Prentice Hall, 2004.  By Clawson, David L.
  6. The student must have computer literacy skills to:
    • Save and retrieve files to a location
    • Download, save, and open files from a source
    • Locate and submit files with an attachment
    • Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
    • Participate in an online chat room environment
    • Navigate the Internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
    • Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
  7. Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
  8. Have adequate computer operating hardware
