ENGL 1020 - English Composition II

Course Description: Similar to English 1010 but with emphasis on the techniques of reading and explicating works of literature, particularly the novel and poetry. In addition, emphasis on analysis of literature/criticism with writing at a more advanced level.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to

  1. Read and critically analyze works of literature.
  2. Define and apply literary terms.
  3. Write critically about literary elements and their use.
  4. Express critical opinions about readings providing textual support for those opinions.
  5. Write effective essays on topics pertaining to short story, drama, novel, and poetry.
  6. Write with a sense of purpose, organization, and mechanical correctness.*

Content Information:
  1. Students must complete sufficient work assignment to earn a course grade of “C” or better.
  2. Students will complete the following:
    • In-class assignments explicating and evaluating literature.
    • Discussion responses to prompts demonstrating their ability to provide textual support for their opinions.
    • Essays of analysis of poetry, short story, and novel.
Course Expectations: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to
  1. Write effective essays with a clear, thoughtful thesis, topic sentences that develop logically from the thesis, and specific supporting details.
  2. Make insightful personal connections between texts and/or text and the outside world.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to develop surface level ideas to symbolic and allegorical levels showing multi-dimensional thinking.
  4. Develop critical evaluative standards about quality.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid e-mail address, using it to e-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class.
  2. Access the Internet to log in regularly to check e-mail, respond to discussion prompts, and fulfill reading assignments in a timely fashion.
  3. Communicate with the instructor about content questions, assignments, and deadlines.
  4. Obtain a copy of the text prior to the beginning of class.
  5. Have the computer literacy skills to
    • Download, save, modify, and upload files from and to a source.
    • Create, open, and send e-mails; attach files to e-mail.
  1. Students are urged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
