ENGL 1010 - English Composition I

Course Description: Designed to develop writing skills. Students write short papers and essays based upon their personal experience and/or assigned readings. The course emphasizes the clear written expression of ideas and the importance of organization, word choice, logic, and sentence construction. The process of planning, writing, revising, and editing essays for a particular audience is also emphasized. See HawkNET for call number.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Provide sufficient practice in writing clear, coherent, effective paragraphs and essays according to commonly accepted standards of usage and mechanics.*
  2. Develop new ideas, clearer insights, deeper thinking, and a more extensive vocabulary through reading and discussion so that writing and sentence structure will improve.
  3. Meet one of the college-wide objectives of General Education: the development of the ability to use written English with clarity and precision.*

Content Information:

  1. In order to receive a passing grade for ENGL 1010, students must complete sufficient work assigned by their instructors to earn a course grade of “C” or better.
  2. To ensure that this objective is met, a minimum grade of “C” in ENGL 1010 is required to qualify for transfer.
  3. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have completed the following:
    • 1-page writing evaluation sample
    • 3-page narrative essay including multiple graded drafts
    • 3-page cited research/definition essay including a proposal/bibliography, and multiple graded drafts
    • Mid term exam over the writing process and researched writing
    • A 5-7 page researched essay, including a graded proposal, annotated bibliography, and multiple graded drafts
    • In-class assignments, including writing practice, peer editing, and quizzes.
    • A group case study presentation on an assigned persuasive subject
    • A cumulative final exam
    • In-class discussion over assigned readings

Course Expectations: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify the writing process and its components.
  2. Apply rhetorical styles to a number of writing situations.
  3. Present oneself as a learner, thinker, and writer by successfully completing a college-level research paper.
  4. Demonstrate the ability to use critical and creative thinking skills effectively by implementing an intertextual approach to writing.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to form clear, coherent sentences, paragraphs, and essays that are effective in their goal.
  6. Utilize MLA document design and source citation style effectively.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid e-mail address
  2. E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
  3. Have access to the Internet
  4. Dedicate 9 hours per week to coursework (reading, study, research, discussion, quizzes, assignments, essays, exams); 14 hours per week during the 10-week summer session. The general rule of thumb in any course face to face or online is 2 hours outside of class for every one hour in. Comp I is a 3 credit hour class, so this is how we arrive at 9 hours during a regular term.
  5. Must obtain required access codes, books, lab supplies, and supplemental materials
  6. The student must have computer literacy skills to:
    • Save and retrieve files to a location
    • Download, save, and open files from a source
    • Locate and submit files with an attachment
    • Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
    • Participate in an online chat room environment
    • Navigate the Internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
    • Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
  7. Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
  8. Have adequate computer operating hardware
