EDUC 1010 - Introduction to Education

Course Description: Provides opportunities for students to test themselves as prospective teachers. Familiarizes students with the attitudes, skills, issues, and structures of education. Includes values exploration, discussion, and participation to initiate decision making.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Deepen their understanding of education by focusing on the following: schools, students, teachers, foundations and the future, and the teaching profession.
  2. Improve their academic analytical writing skills through writing assignments.
  3. Refine their problem-solving skills in preparation for leadership roles in education.
  4. Gain knowledge of current education issues related to the philosophy, history, finance and governance of education in the United States.
  5. Demonstrate professional behavior in their roles as observers and assistants.
  6. Examine their commitment to the teaching profession through reflection on their classroom experiences and reading.

Specific Objectives: Students will:

  • gain a cursory understanding of the dynamics and issues of education
  • become familiar with the models of school
  • understand the importance of teacher attitudes and expectations of students
  • identify diversity in the classroom
  • become familiar with the parts of a typical lesson plan
  • prepare a typed lesson plan
  • gain an understanding of the history of the North American education system
  • write a personal philosophy of education
  • interview a teacher and write a report
  • write a personal autobiography
  • write reflections about information read in the text and from other sources

This course is structured to promote active learning. Discussions and assignments are used to disseminate information, explain concepts, and provide time for reflection.

Course Expectations: Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Students are expected to post comments and observations that promote thoughtful discussions. Each chapter has several opportunities for students to Pause and Reflect. Students are required to post an observation for one Pause and Reflect or CD ROM item and to respond to another student’s posting each week over one of the chapters assigned.

Students are expected to make notes as necessary in order to pass quizzes and tests given over text material, activities, and other related materials.

Students are to login at a time that is most convenient for their schedules. The log must show that you spent at least one hour per chapter to earn participation points. Most likely students will spend 3-5 hours per chapter online.

Assignments, Quizzes and Tests:

Students are expected to take tests on the scheduled dates. Make-up tests will only be allowed in emergency situations. Check with the instructor for individual difficulties as soon as possible.

Practice quizzes will be made available at the end of each chapter. These may be taken as often as the student desires until the test is given over that material. Although the course grades the quizzes these will not be used as part of the grade, instead 5 points will be earned just for attempting to take one of the quizzes.

Points will be deducted for any assignment turned in late.

 

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid email address. Make sure you email address is current on Hawknet.
  2. Email the instructor before the first day of class.
  3. Have access to the internet on a daily basis.
  4. Submit all assignments, quizzes, tests, discussions and projects before the due date to receive credit.
  5. Obtain all required texts and supplies before the first day of class.
  6. Have basic computer skills which include reading and sending emails, sending and opening attachments, downloading files, uploading files, use the Internet as a research tool and participate in discussions.
