Course Description:
Introduction to management theory and practice for supervisors of employees or managers of organizations.
Functions of planning, organizing, directing, controlling and supervising will be studied.
New and rapidly developing areas of management will be discussed.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- Provide an understanding of management styles and when to use them
- Show how to use management tools to make effective decisions
- Provide for the application of management functions
- Management theories, styles and their applications
- The environment in which managers must operate
- The primary responsibilities of managers to plan, organize, lead and control the firm
- Relevance of management issues in real world situations
Content Information:
The final grade will be a reflection of tests covering the required text, online participation and a paper discussing the functions of management.
Assignments: All assignments are to be turned in on time unless otherwise arranged with the instructor. Written assignments will be graded on grammar and punctuation in addition to the assigned content.
Tests: Each test will all be weighted equally. Tests could consist of the following types of questions: multiple-choice, true/false, short answer, situational and essay.
Quizzes: Students may be given quizzes as deemed necessary by the instructor.
Other Activities: During the course of the semester, students will be assigned various readings, activities and projects. Guidelines for these assignments will be presented during the class.
Course Expectations: Students are expected to:
- Spend approximately 10 hours per week learning the functions of business management
- Log into the course environment at least four times per week and participate in the class activities
- Complete all assignments in a timely manner and in accordance with given instructions
- Understand the styles of management through class discussion and activities
- Utilize management tools identified in the text through the use of in-class activities
- Apply different functions which are important to successful management of people through the use of in-class activities
- Monitor current events and bring relevant information to the class
- Act in a respectful and professional manner while conducting class activities
Students can expect:
- To have timely feedback from instructor. Email will be answered within 72 hours and homework graded and returned within seven days.
- That the instructor answers all questions completely and provides feedback on assignments.

- Create, open, read emails and attach files in an email
