Course Description:
Introduction to biological concepts: cell structure and function, reproduction, biological kingdoms and taxonomy, organism interactions, ecosystems, and other selected topics.
The course also includes laboratory exercises that may pertain to the reading assignment, or may cover some other biology topic.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- define traits that determine a “living organism”
- understand levels of organization in living things
- list the major kingdoms of living things and distinguishing traits of each
- conduct an experiment using scientific method
- compose a scientific article
- understand structure, function and reproduction of cells
- Mendelian inheritance
- natural selection
- interactions within ecosystems
- human interactions with continually changing native populations.
Content Information:
Students will be evaluated using the following:
10-12 Chapter or topic quizzes 10-20 points each
Final exam - 50 points
10-12 Lab assignments – 10-50 points each
Course Expectations: Students are expected to:
- Students are expected to check their WEBCT mail and class calendar regularly to make sure that they keep up with class requirements.
- Students are expected to complete all assigned work on time. This includes daily homework, discussion questions and test.
- Students are expected to contact the instructor if they are going to be unable to login for a long duration of time.
- No test shall be made up unless arrangements are made BEFORE the scheduled test date.
- Students are expected to read assigned chapters, assigned outside readings, and other assigned work on time.
- Students must be willing to conduct lab exercises independently, following directions given online.
- Students are expected to actively participate in classroom discussions.
Students can expect:
- To have timely feedback from instructor. Email will be answered within 72 hours and homework graded and returned within seven days.
- That the instructor answers all questions completely and provides feedback on assignments.
Student Requirements:
- Have a valid e-mail address
- E-mail the course instructor prior to the first day of class
- Have access to the Internet
- Student is expected to spend approximately 10 hours a week in the course
- Must obtain required access codes, books, lab supplies, and supplemental materials
- The student must have computer literacy skills to:
- Save and retrieve files to a location
- Download, save, and open files from a source
- Locate and submit files with an attachment
- Create, edit, save, and retrieve files from a location
- Participate in an online chat room environment
- Navigate the Internet to reach a web site or search the Internet
- Create, open, and read e-mails and attach files in an e-mail
- Students are strongly encouraged to take the online tutorial and/or non-credit online preparation course.
