ACCT 1210 - Principles of Accounting 2

Course Description: This course is a continuation of ACCT 1200. Principles of Accounting II includes accounting a brief review of accounting 1 including corporate accounting, long term debt, and cash flow statements. Also covers accounting for manufacturing businesses, preparing and using accounting data for management decision making, and analyzing and interpreting financial statements.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze record and report transactions for businesses organized as a corporation.
  2. Summarize and apply basic financial and managerial accounting terms, concepts and principles.
  3. Account for bonds payable and investments in bonds.
  4. Prepare, analyze, and interpret corporate financial statements including the balance sheet, income statement, retained earnings statement and cash flow statement.
  5. Analyze record and report transactions for manufacturing businesses.
  6. Prepare reports for use by management.
  7. Use accounting information to support operating decisions and planning decisions.

Specific Objectives: Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Describe the nature of a corporation.
  2. Prepare transactions for stockholders’ equity including paid-in capital, stock issues, treasury stock, stick splits, and dividends.
  3. Identify issues in corporate financing, characteristics of bonds payable and prepare financial disclosures.
  4. Prepare and analyze cash flows using the statement of cash flows.
  5. Perform basic financial statement analysis using ratios and interpret company performance.
  6. Analyze a publicly traded company using corporate annual reports as the basis for analysis.
  7. Explain managerial accounting concepts, principles and cost terms.
  8. Identify costing systems (including job order, process, just-in-time systems)  and use data to prepare reports.
  9. Prepare and interpret cost behavior analysis for predicting cost behavior.
  10. Demonstrate use of cost-volume-profit analysis.
  11. Prepare budgets for manufacturing businesses.
  12. Evaluate business performance using variances and standard costs.
  13. Describe performance evaluation for decentralized operations.
  14. Apply and explain decision making tools using differential analysis, product pricing, and capital investment decisions.

Content Information:

In order to receive a passing grade for ACCT 1210, students must successfully complete:

Chapter quizzes over each assigned chapter.
Chapter assignments and projects.
Comprehensive final exam.

Course Expectations: Students are expected to:

  • Spend approximately 15-20 hours per week learning accounting and preparing for quizzes, tests and completing assignments and projects.
  • Submit assignments and take quizzes while meeting deadlines for completion.
  • Communicate with instructor regularly throughout the course.
  • Manage the technology of an on-line course.
  • Act in a mature and professional manner when interacting with instructor and classmates.

Student Requirements:

  1. Have a valid email address
  2. Email the course instructor within three days of registration giving student’s email address.
  3. Contact instructor immediately with change of address.
  4. The students must have computer literacy skills to:
    • Download, save and open files
    • Create and submit files with an attachment
    • Participate in an online discussion environment
    • Create, open and read emails; also, attach files in an email
  5. Have adequate computer operating hardware (MS Word and MS Excel)
