Utility Line Facility

Northeast Community College plans to build a new facility for its utility line program. Northeast’s utility line program is one of only three associate degree programs in the United States. The program currently admits 48 students annually, and many more are waiting to get into the program. It is expected that the demand for skilled technicians will rise over the next 10 years due to the retirement of 40 percent or more of today’s utility line workforce.

Currently, utility line students share a small 3,200 square foot lab with approximately 160 students from electrical construction and control, electromechanical, and irrigation technology which creates cramped quarters for students and safety concerns.

The new facility would include additional laboratory, classroom, and office space and that could be used year-round for the utility line program and the Utility Line Job Training and Safety Program. In addition, other degree programs will benefit from space that will be vacated by utility line.

Due to limited funding for building projects, part of the funding for the new building will come from private and corporate donations. For more information about the utility line building project, contact the Foundation Office at (402) 844-7056.

Northeast Community College Utility Line Program

  • 1 of 3 two-year degree Utility Line programs in the U.S.
  • Program started in 1972, with 16 students admitted
  • Competitive, selective admission process
  • Provides 40 new utility workers each year
  • Provides job training safety statewide
  • Students are required to gain work experience through a Cooperative Internship Program that provides the student with:
    • 480 hours of hands-on training with an electric utility
    • Income and a first job reference
    • The Internship in turn provides the utility with an opportunity to screen potential full-time workers.
  • Job Placement
    • 100% placement rate
    • 86% placed in job-related field
    • Average starting salary = $16.11 per hour
    • Each year 75% of graduates are employed in Nebraska
  • Current Facilities
    • Northeast Utility Line students currently share a lab with students from the electrical, electromechanical, and irrigation programs.
    • The single lab does not provide enough instructional time to support all programs located in the facility.
    • A facility expansion would not only allow Northeast to admit more students each year into the program, but it would also enhance statewide job training safety.
