| General Education Mission
Mission:
General Education adds breadth and depth to the
students' educational experience. NECC prepares its students
for mature decision making as workers, consumers, and citizens
by enriching their general life perspectives and providing
them with a foundation for lifelong learning.
Philosophy
The General Education Philosophy of Northeast Community
College consists of the following beliefs:
- Students should possess knowledge enabling them to
live informed, productive lives in their respective communities
and be prepared for lifelong learning.
- General education courses introduce students to knowledge
and skills that enable them to fulfill educational and
occupational goals—graduates having completed general
education requirements become better prepared to function
effectively as citizens.
- General educational courses are essential. General
education courses will assist students in achieving a
goal of lifelong learning, providing them a broader outlook
beyond the skills required in their particular discipline
These courses are designed to broaden students' general
life perspectives, both academically and socially.
- Developmental courses assist students in developing
prerequisite skills when necessary. In these courses,
students are prepared for the academic challenge posed
by college level courses.
- Assessment of general education is a major component
in the learning process at all levels.
General education goals can be achieved in general education
courses and degree-specific courses. Productive
citizens need to communicate effectively, apply basic mathematical
strategies, solve problems and interact in a variety of
social settings. Therefore, NECC has established a set of
general education goals to include these areas.
